Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmentally-focused approach based on the ‘polluter-pays’ principle. Whoever introduces packaging or packaged goods into a country’s market remains responsible for it until the end of the packaging life cycle, including the time after disposal.

In our webinars, operators speak about their lessons learned and challenges implementing and operating an EPR system - this time, Ecoembes from Spain shares its experiences. Ecoembes is the Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for packaging in Spain and reduces the impact of packaging on the environment through recycling and eco-design. The organisation enables plastic packaging, cans and cartons as well as paper and cardboard packaging to have a second life. Ecoembes was founded in 1996 in anticipation of Law 11/97 on Packaging and Packaging Waste. This law establishes obligations intended to aid in the recovery of packaging waste and in its subsequent processing and recycling.

With the webinar „Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging – Experience of Spain”, we want to show how an EPR system can function successfully over many years.
