Getting EPR to work
Solutions for sustainable Packaging Waste Management
Packaging material threatens to pollute landscapes, rivers, oceans, and deserts worldwide. To address this global problem, in March 2022, the UNEA 5 agreed on the "Resolution to end Plastic Pollution". As a result, each country will be required to develop a concept for the sustainable consumption and treatment of plastic packaging. An Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system implemented nationwide and mandatory for all distributors can reduce the amount of waste from packaging material, increase the recycling rate, positively influence product design, and can be leveraged as a tool to stimulate the development of a circular economy.
Best practices and lessons learned from Jordan and other countries
With the adoption of its Waste Management Law (2020) and the EPR Regulations (2022), Jordan has already developed an effective instrument to enable a more sustainable approach to plastic packaging and has become a frontrunner in the region.
The conference "Getting EPR to work" under the patronage of the Jordanian Ministry of Environment (MoEnv) aims to show the progress of this development to all involved stakeholders and to create synergies and networks for further implementation. The active participation and exchange with decision-makers and stakeholders from other countries implementing an EPR system (Malaysia, Tunisia, Kenya, and Egypt) are intended to foster technical exchanges and establish international networks.
